Uma Baratha Nrithyam Dance Academy will be organising Salangai Poojai for 13 of its students at the RTM Auditorium. Guru Uma Thevi Sivabalan said that the students must have undergone about two to three years training and must be competent before being allowed to perform Salangai Poojai.

Meet the visionary behind Uma Dance Academy, Uma had six years training under renowned bharatanatyam artiste Padma Bushan Dr Padma Subramaniyam in Chennai, India. For Indian classical dance and music, the credibility of the teachers is judged by their gurus and is known as ‘guru parambarai’ or lineage of teachers. As a student of Dr Padma, Uma commands respect.

Uma Dance Academy
Uma Thevi Baratha Nrithyam Academy was established in 1995 by Guru Srimathi Uma Thevi Sivabalan, the first Malaysian to complete her Arangetram in Bharatha Nrithyam under the esteemed Guru Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subramanyam in Chennai. Born in Ipoh, she is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sugunatheeran – Saravana Komari, and a devoted wife to Mr. Sivabalan, as well as a loving mother to four children.
During her formative years in India, while perfecting her craft in Bharatha Nrithyam, Uma Thevi also pursued higher education. After her Arangetram, she was honored with the Natya Bhavanasia Nrithvam title by Dr. Kishor of Chennai in 2010 and was later awarded the Swara Sanggeetha Natyamani in 2012, followed by the Sanggeetha Natya Maamani title in 2013. Her academic qualifications include Nrithyam Visharad and Nrithyam Prevesika, and she possesses deep knowledge in Indian Classical Music and the Sanskrit language. Uma Thevi is also skilled in nattuvaanggam, taught by Dr. Padma Subramanyam.
